Help with school meals

21 September 2026 - News
Children in state-funded schools can now get free school meals if their household receives Universal Credit. This includes children in both primary and secondary schools, regardless of household income.

The change is expected to help around 500,000 more children across the country, making it easier for families to access healthy meals at school while reducing household costs.

What could this mean for you?

If you're eligible, you could save around £500 a year for each child on school lunches. This could help ease some of the pressure on your household budget and free up money for other essentials.

Apply for free school meals

Free school meals are not awarded automatically, so you'll need to apply online through the Government website: Apply for free school meals

You can also contact your child's school or visit your local council's website for information about applying.
